As a fashion photographer, I’ve seen how the right clothing can completely transform a frame. While the design of each piece matters, the way we combine them is equally important.
In today’s article, I’m excited to share one of the most versatile styling techniques used in campaigns around the globe: layering. I’ll walk you through the concept, showcase popular examples, and share my take on it. Then it’s your turn to put your own spin on this timeless method and bring your style to life.

Layering
Layering is a fashion technique that involves wearing multiple garments on top of each other. It’s a deliberate method of adding depth, texture, and interest to an outfit. Think of it like building a painting—each layer adds dimension. Not only does layering allow you to create a stylish look, but it’s also practical for staying warm in colder temperatures.
Typically, layering starts with a base layer that’s simple or fitted, followed by a second layer, a third, or even more, depending on the weather and the look you’re aiming to achieve. This process can be as simple or as intricate as you want, achieved through combinations of texture, color, and size.
A classic layering combo we’ve all probably tried at some point is a basic button-up shirt paired with a sweater—like this one.
However, this concept becomes even more intriguing with the addition of a third piece: outerwear. A well-chosen jacket, blazer, or coat can elevate your outfit by adding structure, depth, and a touch of drama. In the photo below, the look stays cohesive by incorporating pieces within the same color family while playing with textures and patterns.
You can also do it by mixing colors in the same hue, creating a polished and harmonious ensemble.
To take it up a notch, consider adding a tie. My husband wears this combination often, drawing inspiration from Ralph Lauren, and I have to say—it instantly elevates the entire look.
Before diving into the next section, I want to demonstrate how versatile layering can be. In the examples below, you’ll see how layering can take on completely different looks and feels. One example features a dress, showcasing how combining textures can add depth and interest.
The remaining two example explore the concept of playing with size. In the middle example, the turtleneck base provides a snug fit that works beautifully for layering in chilly conditions. Meanwhile, the third example flips the script with an oversized base layer paired with a smaller second layer. This approach feels more suited to warmer months but isn’t limited to them.
Step by Step
Let’s do this together! I’m starting with a plain white button-down shirt and black jeans. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this look, it feels a bit plain and could use some styling.
I’m starting with a black turtleneck bodysuit as the foundation for the layering process. Even at this stage, the look already feels more intentional and polished.
Next, I’m swapping my chunky sneakers for pointed boots, which instantly elongate my figure. To give the outfit more structure, I’m adding a third layer: a blazer. And since it’s freezing here in Chicago, I’ll be topping it off with a coat—but I won’t show it to keep things simple.
Finally, it’s time to bring it all together with accessories. A big bow I found at Anthropologie—seriously, there’s no bow like it! I’m also adding Petra earrings and a pair of sunglasses from a shop that has some amazing styles at great prices (definitely check them out!).
And here’s the before and after transformation—plus a shot of the look out in the wild!
Of all the layering techniques we discussed today, which one intrigued you the most—layering by color, texture, or size?
