Symmetry is overrated

A common comment I get on social media goes along the lines of “I'm not symmetric, that’s why I’m not photogenic.” This perception stems from the widespread belief that symmetry equates to attractiveness. But how much of this belief is grounded in scientific fact, and how much is shaped by media and popular culture?
