I'm standing in the frozen foods aisle, debating between gelato flavors, when I overhear two teenage girls deep in conversation. Every word glows with teenage nonsense, logic nowhere in sight.
People romanticize being a teenager like it was some golden age. It wasn’t. At 15, your confidence is weird, your freedom is on a leash, your heart is a crash-test dummy, and your money’s whatever you find in the dryer. I had it good as a teen, and I still wouldn’t go back.
As I turn to glance at these teens, nostalgia ambushes me. One girl is styled straight out of Avril Lavigne’s "Sk8er Boi". My heart softens instantly. I was her once: a rebel WITHOUT a cause, convinced I knew everything while blissfully knowing nothing. There is a magic to bold teenage ignorance. Sometimes it sparks innovation. Sometimes it leads to a really unfortunate hairstyle.
Fortunately, I don’t need to be a teenager again to do bold things. I’ve never truly lost that part of myself. My mom, the queen of experimentation, taught me well. She dances, laughs, and dives into trends fearlessly, no matter her age. While I might not match her effortless charm, I’m bold in my own way through art, style, decor, and especially photos. For me, embracing trends isn’t about mimicking the younger crowd. It’s about stepping outside my comfort zone, trying something new, and then deciding if it’s truly mine or not.
