Hey, I’m Bonnie and welcome to my Friday newsletter. Each week I share insight into the art of being photogenic, including how to pose, what to wear—fashionable style, makeup—and a lot of whatnot that may benefit your photo. Why, because you can do all that with a phone camera.
Boy photos girl, girl can’t picture it. This is the everywoman and ordinary man story of (call them Emma and Oliver) searching for contentment or at least a quality of content on social media. Neither is among the few with an uncanny knack for lucking into good fortune. Follow along with our popular twosome in order to observe their techniques and photographic issues confronting them.
Leave a comment with a thought or question, and I'll create more scenarios to help you help another take your picture.
Scenario: People aren’t mind readers
Emma invites Oliver downtown to grab a cup of joe and a bite to eat at a trendy café. Emma pulses with excitement over visiting the certified photogenic spot. Oliver is happy to be a tagalong but doesn’t seem to get what all the hype is about. When their food arrives, Emma asks Oliver to take a picture of her. Oliver hasn’t seen pictures of the site on social as Emma has. Frankly, he doesn’t seem to understand why he's even taking her picture. The sequence about to unfold does not look promising but for providing a snapshot of his progress. At first, Oliver fails to include the place setting in the frame of the photo. On his second attempt, he holds the camera low, covering a wide angle of view, but in Emma’s view it made her look too big. On the third try, he aims to find a happy medium but the picture of Emma featured a weird dude in the background.
Conclusion: Emma is not photogenic. She is too picky. Or Oliver is a terrible photographer. How else could he have possibly managed a strikeout with the misses on three successive mistakes?
Reality: Emma is picky. And that’s okay. She wants a cute photo. And she is photogenic. Oliver may be a terrible photographer. But it’s not his fault. He isn’t a mind reader.
