I’ve been curling my eyelashes since… I don’t know… forever?
Apparently, I have what some very professional makeup artists call "donkey eyelashes." (Don’t laugh. Okay, you can laugh a little.) Basically, my lashes are straight—or worse, they point downward—instead of that dreamy, lifted curl everyone wants.
And just when I thought I had my technique down, I found out I’d been curling them wrong for years. Of course, once I realized it, I started seeing THE PROBLEM everywhere. And trust me, I wasn’t alone. So, here’s the tea—because if you’re just pressing and hoping for the best, you might be making your lashes look worse. Let’s fix that.
The Biggest Curling Mistake
The mistake is setting the curler on your lashes, pressing down really hard, and then letting go. Sounds normal, right? Nope.
Here’s why that doesn’t work:
You don’t need that much pressure to get results.
Pressing too hard in one spot gives your lashes a harsh L-shape instead of a natural curve.
Nobody wants that.
The Right Way to Curl Your Lashes
Instead of one hard press, try this:
Set the curler at the base of your lashes and press for just a couple of seconds.
Release slightly, move up a bit, and press again.
Keep repeating—press, release, press, release—until you’ve curled the entire lash.
This method creates an actual curve instead of a sharp bend. It makes your lashes look lifted, natural, and way more flattering.
🎥 I made a quick video showing exactly how to do this. Watch it here if you’re more of a visual learner.
The Mascara That’s Keeping My Lashes Curled
Now, what’s the point of a perfect curl if your mascara weighs it down? I’ve been testing the Tarte Tubing mascara, and I’m actually impressed. I’ve had a streak of trying really bad mascaras lately, so finding one that holds a curl is a win.
A Budget-Friendly Mascara You Might Love
I was talking to my sister-in-law the other day, and she swears by a drugstore mascara that’s super affordable and actually works. I haven’t tried it yet, but in case you’re on the hunt for a budget-friendly option, I’m linking it here. If you end up trying it before I do, let me know what you think!
What’s Your Favorite Mascara?
We had a whole chat discussion about the best mascaras, and some of the recommended ones were:
Mascara #1 (Kate)
Mascara #2 (Kalisa Jenne-Fraser)
Mascara #3 (Jennifer Adams)
I’m leaving the chat open, so if you have a holy-grail mascara, drop it in there! Let’s build the ultimate list.
